HaAzinu 53-1

Listen

Deuteronomy 32:1-6

He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he. They have acted corruptly toward him; to their shame they are no longer his children, but a warped and crooked generation. Is this the way you repay the LORD, O foolish and unwise people? Is he not your Father, your Creator, who made you and formed you?

Deut. 32:4-6 NIV

May one have the Eternal as Father without being his son?

This song of Moshe is a prophecy that speaks of all the history of Israel from before their beginning to their glorious and eternal ending. That's why it is a testimony throughout the centuries of how the Eternal has been faithful and a part of His people has been unfaithful. However, because of the Eternal's grace and mercy He will fulfil the purpose He has for His people, and will eventually triumph in glory.

In these verses it is written that the sons of Israel are not considered sons of the Eternal when they turn their ways to corruption and pervert justice even if He still calls Himself their Father. This teaches us that sonship not only has to do with origin but also with faithfulness to that origin (cf. Luk. 15:24). To be a son of the Eternal implies being like Him and walking on His path. Since He is faithful, His sons and daughters are the faithful ones. Since He is not morally perverted, His sons and daughters are those who are not morally corrupt. Just like He is righteous, His sons and daughters are those who are righteous. Just like He is upright, His sons and daughters are those who are upright.

Those who abandon the ways of the Eternal will lose the right to be His sons and daughters, together with their inheritance of life.

Another thing we learn from this is that the title "Son of God" in the Scriptures about Yeshua, has to do not only with his appointment as future king Messiah of Israel, but also with his behaviour as a man, the integrity of his character and obedience to the Eternal.

There is no one that has fulfilled everything the Eternal has commanded except for Yeshua. There is no man on earth that has been absolutely faithful, incorrupt, totally righteous and upright, except Yeshua. That's the reason he is the only one who can be called "Son of God" with capital letters. The rest of us are sons of the Eternal, but he is the Son of the Eternal, one of a kind; that is why he is called the only begotten Son of the Father.

Ketriel
